The Queen Bees made a winning start to the new Women’s Premier League
season on Sunday with a 4-2 win away at local rivals Guildford Lightning.
The heavily depleted Queen Bees side had only 11
skaters with Claire Fay and Betony Garner injured and Leanne Ganney unable
to play until her 16th birthday in October. The skeleton squad put in a
fine performance however, dominating Guildford in the first period which
saw goals from Chrissy Newman and Amanda Carr, (assisted by Lydia
Westcombe), to put them 2-0 up at the break.
The Queen Bees continued to put the pressure on their
hosts when Newman increased the tally to 3 early in the second period with
a carbon copy of the first goal chipped over the goalkeeper’s shoulder.
A serious of penalties meant some upheaval for Bracknell and Guildford
eventually broke through to pull a goal back through Grace Drake at 34
minutes as she stormed the net to scramble the puck free from under Rhian
Galea in goal and knock it over the line.
The Queen Bees came back to restore the gap early in
the third period through Dani Summers who hit a missile of a slapshot past
Guildford's ex-WNHL goalkeeper for Bracknell’s 4th goal. The Queen Bees
then held on well despite looking tired until Drake again pulled one back
for Guildford on a breakaway and deked Galea in her first league start for
4 years. The final minutes were frantic with Guildford fighting hard to
level the score and Bracknell hanging on however the Queen Bees were very
pleased to take the 4-2 win and get their season off to a flying
start.
Player-of-the-match for Bracknell was Jo Couture.
